DCLA Day 2

Monday had been built into our schedule as a "fun
day", and we had fun. Some of us began the day with
breakfast across the street at Denny's (Yes, Denny
Rognes tried to convince Mitzi, his waitress, to give
him a Denny's shirt). Others of us slept as late as
we could even if it meant skipping breakfast. Then we
got on the bus with Uncle Jim and Aunt B.J. at 9:00
and headed west for Six Flags. On the way, we stopped
at the Jelly Belly factory gift shop. We got to Six
Flags at about 11:00. There were some great roller
coasters, and a number of the kids rode them all. It
wasn't busy at all, and nobody ever waited in a line
that was more than ten minutes long. That was
fantastic. Six members of our group, in two groups of
three, did the free falling "Sky Coaster", in which
you are strapped into a special suit, lifted up 100
feet, and then dropped into a free fall with only a
single cable holding the three of you as you fall and
swing. The brave six were (1) Emily Georgia, Chalsea
Harmon, and Alissa Hugo, and (2) Tyler Tweeten, Joe
Jamtgaard, and (are you ready for this?) Mary
Bosacker! She said that with all the people she had
asked to pray for her this week, she knew she'd be
fine. We got back on the bus at 5:30 and then decided
to take a little sightseeing swing to San Francisco.
Jim took us to an overlook above San Francisco harbor,
with a stunning view of the bay, downtown, and the
Golden Gate bridge. Some of the kids didn't have
their cameras for the group shot we took there (the
sightseening swing was a spur of the moment decision),
but those who did promised duplicates to any who need
them. Pastor Dykstra took a number of pictures to
post on the website, and he can make copies of those
available as well. The kids really enjoying being
able to see a sight they'd seen so many times in
movies and on TV. After a "Micky D's" stop for
supper, we drove back to Sacramento and got back to
the hotel at 10:00 p.m. to relax before turning in. A
card game ("Phase Ten") broke out in the lobby.
Laura Fjelstad ordered the first Domino's Pizza of the
week. Many more youth groups arrived on Monday, so
the hotel is starting to feel like itís going to feel
all week. I know that hotel staff people sometimes
get a little tense about having this many teenagers in
their place of business, but I've been really proud of
how polite our kids have been. DCLA is an Evangelism
conference, and we talked with them about the fact
that one of the simplest ways you can be a witness to
the faith is just by treating people well.

Tuesday we're letting them sleep in. The adults will
be going to the Convention Center to register and
attend orientation at 9:00 a.m. We'll then meet with
the kids at 11:00. Then they'll have several hours of
free time. There is a very nice mall just two blocks
away, and "Old Sacramento" is just a block away in the
other direction. Theyíll stay in small groups and
choose between those and a few other options. At
5:30, we'll walk together to the opening "Big Night"
of the Conference. We really appreciate those of you
whom we know will be praying for the event to get off
to a great start!
