SALEM LUTHERAN CHURCH COUNCIL MINUTES
The Salem Church Council met on October 9, 2003 in the Lounge.
Those present were: Pastor Dykstra, Deb Bachman, Bruce Adams, Dianne Gardner, Margaret Okland, Scott Helgeson, Keith Helland, Wayne Nyguard, Rhonda Charlton, Lori Westcott and Kathy Gilbertson. Late: Mark Alphs. Absent: Pastor Mackey, Doug Bruhns
Pastor Dykstra led us in devotion and prayer.
Each council member individually read the Secretary's Report. Motion to accept the minutes was made by Bruce Adams and seconded by Margaret Okland.
Board Reports:
Board of Education: Lori Westcott reported the board is making plans for the Christmas program. A date will be announced later. They are ready to begin the second rotation of Sunday School.
Board of Life and Growth: Margaret Okland reported the worship bags are in the Narthex and ready to be used. Letters will be sent out to the parents explaining the bags. The new membership orientation will be Thursday, October 23 at 7:00 PM. The new member fellowship coffee hour will be Sunday, November 2.
Board of Stewardship and Social Ministry: Wayne Nyguard reported the board is working on Stewardship month which is in November. Stewardship Sunday will be November 22-23.
Board of Worship and Music: Keith Helland reported that Salem will be hosting an organ symposium on November 9, from 2:00-4:00 conducted by Charles Hendrickson. Watch the bulletin for further information. The community Thanksgiving worship service will be held at the Methodist church this year. The Norwegian Choir concert was great!
Board of Youth: Rhonda Charlton reported the board is looking for replacements to be on the board. Deb Bachman reported they are planning a turkey dinner fund raiser matched by Thrivent in November. The money raised will be used for the youth camp scholarship fund.
Board of Property and Management: Bruce Adams reported the tuck pointing is on the calendar and will be completed soon. The bell tower has been patched and will hopefully last through the winter. The board is seeking bids on the stained glass windows which are in need of repair.
Treasurer's Report - no report. As of September 30 we have a balance of ($1517.60).
The Financial Secretary's Report was given by Dianne Gardner. The amount of $27,932.92 was deposited in the month of September.
One In Christ Parish Council: Scott Helgeson reported that the pictures are being taken for the parish directory. A motion was made by Bruce Adams, seconded by Dianne Gardner to give $500 for the youth parish budget. Motion was made by Keith Helland, seconded by Rhonda Charlton to accept board reports.
Old Business: Myrna Langerud has established in Duane's memory a matching fund scholarship to be used for seminary support. A motion was made by Bruce Adams, seconded by Dianne Gardner that the memorial fund will match up to $1000 to be given to Dan Skogen. Dan has been approved as a candidate for ministry in the ELCA by our Synod Candidacy Committee. The membership roster letter has been mailed. We have received some response. It has been reported that approximately $8365.00 has been pledged or received for the kitchen/sidewalk/World Hunger/tuck point project. A motion was made by Margaret Okland, seconded by Wayne Nyguard to set Thursday, January 29, 2004 as the date for the annual meeting. Pastor Dykstra reported that 32 people will be going to Guatemala. They will be doing service projects.
New Business: Terry Wegener is unable to serve on the nominating committee. A motion was made by Bruce Adams, seconded by Keith Helland to give Mark Alphs the authority to fill the vacancy. A motion was made by Mark Alphs, seconded by Dianne Gardner to accept Kevin & Kodi Rohne and Tim Hermanson as new members. The transfers for Scott & Julie Yaeger, Matt & Tina Honsey family and Rick & Char Colby family were approved. It was brought up for discussion to have a roster with pictures and information of our service members. Margaret Okland will work on this project.
The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday; November 13, 2003. A motion to adjourn was made by Dianne Gardner, seconded by Margaret Okland.
