SALEM LUTHERAN CHURCH COUNCIL
The Salem Lutheran Church Council met June 14, 2006. The board members present were Don Aamodt, Tami Alphs, Scott Helgeson, Sue Smith for Jerry Hoffman, Deb Kingland, Jennifer McGrady, Rick Orban, Bob Peterson, Wanda Playter, Gaye Sletten and Carolyn Swanson. Guests were David Kingland, Abby Holtan and Mary Bosacker. Devotions were given by Deb Kingland.
Secretary's Report:
Each council member individually read the Secretary's Report. There was one correction on the Board of Youth; it should have said the youth are attending a WIYLDE (Wholly Iowa Youth Leadership Discipling Event) Conference, not Wild Concert. Motion to accept the minutes as corrected was made by Scott Helgeson and seconded by Tami Alphs. All Approved.
Correspondence:
A thank you was read from Valeda Abbey for the morning coffee reception on New Member Sunday.
Treasurer's Report:
Scott Helgeson reported that the General Fund Balance as of June 30, 2006 was $26,992.16. Scott reported we have started paying on the cemetery fund load, which is now down to $37,482.
Financial Secretary's Report:
Tami Alphs reported that the General Fund Income for May was $23,025.36, with the total income for May being $32,501.81. Motion to accept the treasurer's report and the financial secretary's report was made by Bob Peterson and seconded by Carolyn Swanson. All approved.
BOARD REPORTS:
Board of Worship & Music:
Carolyn Swanson handed out the new summer schedule. It is a spreadsheet for the next 2 months that includes people's responsibilities for the services. This will be posted around the church and is posted on our website as well. Carolyn also talked about the Installation Service for Pastor Weeg. There will be no Saturday service on September the 23rd and only one service on Sunday September 24th at 10:00 am. The Board is also considering having a combined service 3 to 4 times a year, having lunch, fellowship and possibly ministry fair at this time. Additionally, they are in the process of updating the Saturday night service worship books.
Board of Stewardship and Social Ministry:
Don Aamodt reported that Rally Sunday, Sept. 10th, is when they will be distributing the new time and talent surveys. They are also looking at how best to organize these volunteers. They are looking at possibly having one person to coordinate all the volunteers so everyone has a chance to contribute and that we get more people involved.
Board of Education:
Abby Holtan reported on behalf of the SON Shine Preschool. They had interviewed 3 people for the position of Associate Teacher. Their recommendation was to hire Marlys Cavett. A motion was made by Scott Helgeson to allow SON Shine Preschool to hire Marlys Cavett as Associate Teacher. The motion was seconded by Jennifer McGrady. All Approved. Abby also said they have updated the contracts for employment and the by-laws. They will be e-mailing the updated documents to the Council. A discussion on the need to get a professional to review of our employment contracts and by-laws followed. Rick Orban made a motion to have professional review of the documents/contracts. The motion was seconded by Scott Helgeson. All Approved. The Staff Management Committee will be meeting with Ree Pederson and Marlys Cavett to go over the new employee contracts.
Bob Peterson reported that they are in the process of getting teachers for the new Sunday School year and it is going well. Deb Kingland also mentioned that Pastor Weeg has been talking with Pastor Peters and Pastor Baldwin about confirmation.
Board of Youth:
Wanda Playter reported there are youth going to the WIYLDE (Wholly Iowa Youth Leadership Discipling Event) Conference on July 24-28. There are currently some kids in Texas for a youth conference. There are 9 youth planning to attend a mission trip to New Hampshire the end of this month. Wanda also reported that during Rally Sunday we will be introducing and welcoming the new Youth Director, Katie Zenk.
Board of Life and Growth:
Jennifer McGrady reported that there will be welcoming activities for Pastor Weeg and his wife, Peg, on August 19th and 20th. There will be pie and ice cream social after the Saturday night service and there will be pancakes served on Sunday from 9:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Then on Sunday, August 27th there will be a picnic on the south lawn. Starting Saturday August 19th the Board of Life and Growth will have name tags made up for each Salem member. All congregation members will be asked to wear these during the church services.
Board of Property and Management:
Sue Smith reported in the absence of Jerry Hoffman. Sue reported that the parsonage sale explanation will be in the bulletin next week. Chuck McGrady will speak on behalf of the Board of Property and Management at the congregational meeting. Scott Helgeson did an appraisal of the parsonage. He has come back with an approximate value of $95,600. Scott explained that there are 4 licensed realtors that are Salem members. He recommended that we take sealed bids from these realtors and go with the lowest percentage. Sue also reported that Randall Construction will be coming to look at the bell tower. They are also looking at the next phase of stained glass windows that will be around $13,000.
Pastor's Report:
Pastor Norris had 67 visits, 32 communions at the Care Center, 23 at Mills Harbour and 43 shut-ins for June.
Call Committee Report:
David Kingland reported that they are currently taking bids on moving expenses for Pastor Weeg. At this time the bids seem to have a big range, so they will continue to get more bids.
Motion was made by Rick Orban and seconded by Tami Alphs to accept these reports. All approved.
OLD BUSINESS: None.
NEW BUSINESS:
Deb Kingland reported that each board should start to put together procedural manuals that can be passed to their board every year.
Deb Kingland reported that the congregational meeting to vote on the call committee and selling of the parsonage will be Sunday, July 16 at 9:45 a.m. and she would like everyone to attend this meeting.
Deb Kingland reported that the supply pastors seem to be working out very well so far. The response has been quite positive.
Mary Bosacker came in to talk about a Prayer Conference that she attended. There was one speaker, Daniel Henderson, who spoke about prayer/support for our Pastors. She was very impressed by this presentation so she ordered the DVD. There will be a showing of this DVD on Saturday, July 22nd following the 5:30 p.m. worship service. There will be a light meal and then showing of the DVD. It is about 1 hour and 5 minutes. Mary will also have handouts of 30 Days of Prayers for our Pastor. Everyone is invited to attend.
Motion to adjourn was made by Scott Helgeson and seconded by Wanda Playter. All approved.
