SALEM LUTHERAN CHURCH COUNCIL MINUTES

The Salem Church Council met on July 9, 2003 in the Lounge.

Those present were: Pastor Mackey, Mark Alphs, Doug Bruhns, Bruce Adams, Margaret Okland, Scott Helgeson, Medara Winters, Lori Westcott and Kathy Gilbertson. Absent: Pastor Dykstra, Dianne Gardner, Keith Helland, Wayne Nyguard and Rhonda Charlton

The council sang a hymn and then Pastor Mackey led us with devotion and prayer.

After taking attendance, it was noted a quorum was not met therefore no official business was done.

Each council member individually read the Secretary's Report.

Board Reports:
Board of Education:
Lory Westcott reported on the ice cream social being planned for August 14 at 7:00. They are making plans for the day camp at Salem. The first day of Sunday School is scheduled for September 7 and it was reported the board is in need of teachers.

Board of Life and Growth: Margaret Okland reported the parish wide joint service would be Sunday, August 17. They are planning a BBQ potluck after the service. Watch the bulletin for more details. Worship bags are being prepared for children up to age 5 and will be placed in the Narthex. The brochures are being worked on to be placed in the welcome wagon packages to be given to new families moving to town.

Board of Stewardship and Social Ministry: No report given

Board of Worship and Music: No report given.

Board of Youth: No report given.

Board of Property and Management: Bruce Adams reported on more leaks in the roof and they are being repaired. The sidewalks are finished and we will be going to the bank and getting a loan to pay for this project. The board is waiting for a call on the tuck-pointing. The Sunday School rooms will be painted before this fall.

Treasurer's Report was given by Doug Bruhns. As of June 30, 2003 we have a balance of $13,204.39.
No Financial Secretary's Report was given. Deposits for the month of June amounted to $30,899.89.

One In Christ Parish Council: Scott Helgeson reported they have been interviewing Youth Directors. Pat Young is organizing a parish wide directory that will be completed this fall. The board accepted the task force recommendation on confirmation. Each church will decide whether students will be confirmed before, during, or after the 9th grade mentoring year. A group from the parish will be attending the ALPHA training conference in Lakeville on July 21-22. We have received donations and grants to cover the cost of the training. A monthly parish healing service will begin August 21. Watch the bulletin for more information on the service. There were 26 people that attended the planning of the parish service trip to Guatemala. The next meeting will be late August. Contact Pastor Peters or Pastor Dykstra for questions.

Old Business: Pastor Mackey reported on the Synod Assembly. He handed out the adopted resolutions. Plans are complete for the hosting of Celebration Iowa Singers and Jazz Bank.

New Business: Synod Mission Specialist Mark Anderson will be at Salem on Sunday, Sept. 14. He will preach at Salem that morning and meet with all Council members from the parish congregations from 2-5 that afternoon.

The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, August 13, 2003.
