SALEM LUTHERAN CHURCH COUNCIL

The Salem Lutheran Church Council met January 10, 2002 in the Lounge.

The members present were Pastor Mackey, Doug Bruhns, Dianne Gardner, Bruce Adams, Margaret Okland, Mark Alphs, Pastor Dykstra, Kathy Ainley Jody Skogen and Karen Rasmusson. Guest was Kathy Gilbertson

Devotions by Pastor Mackey based on the sermon text for this coming Sunday Matthew 3 verses 13 - 17. This is regarding the baptism of Jesus. This coming Sunday we will be giving people the opportunity to come forward to reaffirm their baptism. Prayer concerns were then shared and we prayed together.

Each council member individually read the Secretary's report. Doug Bruhns gave the Treasurer's report. As of December 31, 2001 we have a balance in our checking account of $11,145.94. Our only outstanding debit now is for the windows. Dianne Gardner gave the Financial Secretary's report.

Motion made by Kathy Ainley and seconded by Bruce Adams to accept these reports. All members were in favor.

BOARD REPORTS:
Board of Education
- Kathy Ainley reported they would be having a soup supper before each Lenten Service. This will start on February 20th. The proceeds will go for Summer Bible School and Vacation Bible School. There is also a survey out for an adult Sunday school that would be held during Forum. There is a sign up sheet in the Narthex. David Kingland has agreed to be the 8th grade Sunday school teacher.

Board of Life and Growth - Margaret Okland reported they discussed the new member's class, which will be held January 24, 2002 from 7:00 P.M. till 9:P.M.

Board of Stewardship and Social Ministry - No meeting

Board of Property and Management - Bruce Adams reported our utility bill should go down from last year. Also there is another leak in the Chapel roof that has not been located at this time. New thermostats will begin being installed within the next three weeks. Five should be installed by the next Council meeting. Investigation will begin on the remodeling of the kitchen. They will work with the ladies of the church.

Board of Worship and Music - Pastor Dykstra would like the new board members to meet for a few minutes before the next Council meeting for a briefing on helping serve communion. The Organ builder was here this past week. They will be taking our organ out the week after Easter. We will be without an organ for a few months. Mid summer it will be returned to us. There is some inside work to be done for the organ regarding the pipes when it is installed.

Board of Youth: - Jody Skogen met with the new board members on Sunday. Friday Night Alive is well attended. They are also planning a snow tubing party January 20th.

Motion to accept the board reports by Bruce Adams and seconded by Margaret Okland. All members approved.

BUSINESS:
Pastor Dykstra requested that we revisit two decisions made after the Staff Support Committee's report last month. The first was his salary. Motion was made by Dianne Gardner and seconded by Bruce Adams to revisit this decision. After discussion it was decided to amend the budget to what is proposed for 2002. Proposed is $36,375.00 for the annual salary. This raises the salary 5 steps from last year, but is a smaller increase than what had been approved last month. Motion made by Bruce Adams and seconded by Kathy Ainley to approve this change in the salary. All members were in favor. The second item was the vacation voted on for Jody. Motion was made by Bruce Adams and seconded by Margaret Okland to revisit this item. After much discussion motion was made by Bruce Adams and seconded by Dianne Gardner to increase her vacation to 3 weeks. Majority of the members was in favor.

The next item on the agenda was to finalize the 2002 budget. Motion was made by Dianne Gardner and seconded by Bruce Adams to approve the budget to be presented at the annual meeting. All members were in favor.

The agenda for the annual meeting was presented. This meeting is scheduled for January 31 at 7:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Motion was made by Karen Rasmusson and seconded by Margaret Okland to approve the agenda as presented.

2002 Daily texts were handed out to each of the Council members.

New member is Maggie Martin. Motion to approve by Kathy Ainley and seconded by Doug Bruhns. All members were in favor.

Information only:
Pastor Mackey will be attending a Spiritual Formation Program February 15 - 17, including Sunday.

Council and Board members will be installed at our worship services on February 9 and 10. The next meeting will be February 14, 2002.

A thank you was given to the members going off the council this month. They are Marlo Durby, Darrel Beenken, Mary Peterson, Lorna Thompson and Karen Rasmusson.
