SALEM LUTHERAN CHURCH COUNCIL MINUTES

The Salem Church Council met on August 13, 2003 in the Lounge.

Those present were: Pastor Dykstra, Pastor Mackey, Mark Alphs, Doug Bruhns, Bruce Adams Dianne Gardner, Margaret Okland, Scott Helgeson, Keith Helland, Wayne Nyguard, Pam Brackey and Kathy Gilbertson. Absent: Rhonda Charlton

The council sang a hymn and then Pastor Mackey led us with devotion and prayer.

Each council member individually read the Secretary's Report. Motion to accept the minutes was made by Wayne Nyguard and seconded by Margaret Okland.

Board Reports:
Board of Education:
Pam Brackey reported they were looking for Sunday School teachers for this next year. Rally Sunday is September 7th and September 14 is the first day of Sunday School. Day camp was this week and was going well. The numbers were down from last year.

Board of Life and Growth: Margaret Okland reported the Parish Wide service and picnic is August 17 at Oakwood Park. Volunteers were bringing gas grills and the board was furnishing the drinks.

Board of Stewardship and Social Ministry: Wayne Nyguard reported the board has received a request from the Lutheran Social Service to speak at adult forum and give a presentation. They will be working out the details with Steve Smith on a date. More details will be in the bulletin.

Board of Worship and Music: Keith Helland reported there have been requests for a youth choir again. They will be working on finding a director. The American Guild of Organists will be giving a concert November 9. There will be a communion serving refresher course given before the next council meeting. Those serving communion and the home communion are welcome to attend.

Board of Youth: It was reported that Deb Bachman will be installed on Sunday at the Parish wide outdoor service as Youth Director. On September 30th the youth will host a Norwegian Youth Choir. More details will be given at a later date.

Board of Property and Management: Bruce Adams reported the board has locked in a natural gas price of $100 per month plus 79.7 cents for the next year. There will be a work day on September 3 at 5:00 to complete the work on the area around the new sidewalks. A motion was made by Dianne Gardner and seconded by Doug Bruhns to have a special board meeting September 9 at 7:00 to discuss the kitchen remodeling bids that have been presented.

Treasurer's Report was given by Doug Bruhns. As of July 31, 2003 we have a balance of $7471.65. Riverside and Okoboji camps will each receive $500.

The Financial Secretary's Report was given by Dianne Gardner. The amount of $42,123.46 was deposited in the month of July. Statements will be sent out in September and November.

One In Christ Parish Council: Scott Helgeson reported on the parish wide picture directory that is being worked on. The first healing service will be on August 21. The council has been discussing the budget and changes will be made as needed. Motion was made by Keith Helland, seconded by Doug Bruhns to accept these reports.

Old Business: The Alpha program, an outreach driven Bible study is being worked on and more information will be given this fall. The nominating committee will be discussing the terms of the parish council members. The executive council has been working on Salem's membership. A letter has been drafted and will be put in the newsletter.

New Business: Helen is in need of a new computer in her office. A motion was made by Margaret Okland and seconded by Keith Helland to purchase a new computer for Salem and offer the used one to the parish council. Dan Skogen has enrolled at Wartburg Seminary for this fall. There was discussion on financial support. Robert Filbrandt has been accepted as a new member of Salem.

The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday; September 11, 2003. A motion to adjourn was made by Dianne Gardner, seconded by Bruce Adams.
