The Salem Church Council met on April 15, 2004 in the Lounge.
Those present were: Pastor Dykstra, Pastor Mackey, Scott Helgeson, Deb Kingland, Doug Bruhns, Dianne Gardner, Wayne Nyguard, Amy Olson, Jerry Hoffman and Kathy Gilbertson. Absent: Keith Helland, Bob Peterson. Late: Linda Rasmussen
Council member Jerry Hoffman shared his faith journey with the council. Pastor Mackey led us in prayer.
Each council member individually read the Secretary's Report. Motion to accept the minutes was made by Wayne Nyguard and seconded by Deb Kingland.
The Financial Secretary's Report was given by Dianne Gardner. The amount of $38,083.47 was deposited in April. The ticket sales for Robert Robinson amounted to $4,360.00. With the proceeds the music board will be purchasing equipment.
The Treasurer's Report was given by Doug Bruhns. As of March 31, 2004 we have a balance of $4,138.80. A motion was made Jerry Hoffman and seconded by Wayne Nyguard to accept these reports.
Board Reports:
Board of Worship and Music: Pastor Dykstra reported the worship hosts (greeters) were well received before the services. They will be working on a schedule for the services. They plan to continue with the Robinson concert with a new evangelism idea. The board will like to set aside 100 free tickets to be given to anyone that would invite an unchurched person to attend the concert. The outdoor summer service will start June 6.
Board of Stewardship and Social Ministry: Wayne Nyguard reported the board had discussed consolidating Salem's stewardship program with the One In Christ Parish. The time and talent survey sheets are being prepared to be mailed out and to be returned in June.
Board of Education: Pastor Mackey reported on the spaghetti meal to be served April 25 and the proceeds will be used for camp scholarships. May 9 will be the last day of Sunday School and the kids will be singing. They are in need of teachers for the next season.
Board of Youth: Amy Olson reported the 29 hour famine was a success. They had a goal to raise $500 and it was reported they raised $1300 for Safe Passage. The youth served 200 for the Easter breakfast. The seniors will be recognized at adult forum on May 23. As a mission project the youth has been delivering phone books. The Salem Youth Board will donate $1000 to the group of parish youth attending the mission trip.
Board of Life and Growth: Pastor Mackey reported the new member orientation will be May 11 and May 16 they will be recognized during the service. The board is working on updating the church brochure.
Board of Property and Management: Jerry Hoffman reported they are working on finishing up the kitchen remodeling project. They also purchased a new stove. Two additional thermostats have been replaced through out the church. The board is looking into putting in a sprinkler system on the lawn that is used for the outdoor service. It was reported there has been some repair work done on the parsonage. Work is also being done in the balcony and bell tower area.
One In Christ Parish Council: Scott Helgeson reported the council discussed preapproving the next year's parish portion of the budget in November for the following year.
Motion was made by Amy Olson, seconded by Deb Kingland to accept these reports.
Old Business: There was discussion on the letter sent out from Pastor Baldwin and his family. Anyone interested in attending the Synod Assembly June 11-13 contact Pastor Dykstra or Pastor Mackey. The council has agreed to have prayer with the pastor before the service and they will work out a schedule.
New Business: The council was invited to attend the dinner and then listening to Faith Statements given by the confirmands on April 28. Confirmation will be held May 2. A motion was made by Dianne Gardner and seconded by Linda Rasmussen to accept Doug, Angie and Alyssa Hugo, Melissa Larson and Hailee as new members of Salem. Lavine and Cindy Petersen, Brent, Ashley, Sarah and Brandon, Matt Nepstad and Tom Bakken requested transfers.
The next meeting will be held Thursday, May 13. A motion to adjourn was made by Dianne Gardner and seconded by Deb Kingland.
